Halloween Biscuits!


First a little bit about Halloween......

October 31st is known as All Hallows Eve, the origin of the American word Halloween! Halloween is celebrated by millions of people in multiple countries. If celebrated it is a fun time to hold parties, for kids to dress up as skeletons, ghosts or other scary figures and go door-to-door to get candy. Common symbols of Halloween include pumpkins, ghouls, goblins, bats, ghosts. witches, cats and spiders.

Halloween was discovered in ancient Ireland and Scotland around the time of Christ. The Celts celebrated the day because it was when animal herders would move their animals into barns and pens in preparation for the winter and was also the time of the crop harvests. This yearly seasonal change was marked by a festival called Samhain, pronounced 'sow-ane', which means 'end of summer.' This yearly time of change caused superstition, including a belief in fairies and that the spirits of the dead wandered around looking for bodies to inhabit. It was also believed that since the living did of course not want to be possessed by spirits, they dressed up in costumes and marched around the streets making loud noises with an aim to confuse and frighten the spirits away. November 1st marked the new year for the Celts, so the day of Samhain was believed to be a day that was in neither the year past or the year to come and since it was in between, chaos ruled on that day! How to make delicious Halloween biscuits that are fun to decorate! I purchased my cookie cutters, Halloween sprinkles and the orange and black food colours from Hobby Craft.

INGREDIENTS

175g soft unsalted butter or if vegan Vitalite.

200g caster sugar 2 large eggs or if vegan egg replacement 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 400g plain flour (plus more if needed) 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt For the icing 300g icing sugar (sieved) food colouring

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/gas mark 4/350ºF.

Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy.

Beat the eggs and vanilla in another bowl and then gradually add to the butter and sugar mixing well.

Combine the flour, baking powder and salt and add the dry ingredients to the butter and eggs, mixing gently. If the finished mixture is too sticky to be rolled out, very carefully add some more flour sparingly as too much will make the dough tough.
