Whilst at a recent blog conference I saw the Stretchkins and thought they would be perfect for my mini yoga students. I teach the children I care for and my own children yoga and I thought these cute stretchy creatures would add some fun to our classes.

My son and the children absolutely love practising yoga with these cute creatures and it definitely encourages them to stretch better than they usually do.

Not only are the Stretchkins a great way to encourage children to be active but they are also soft and cuddly and make a fun play pet. With straps on their hands and feet the Stretchkins really live up to their name and stretch so as your children move, they move too.

They stretch up to about four feet but also offer some resistance, so they are exercising little arms and legs at the same time. So far we have had no ripped pets and my son has certainly been stretching his Stretchkins, especially when he takes it with him on his trampoline.

Introducing your children to yoga at an early age can help them learn healthy lifestyle habits and set the foundation for a fit future. I have given an example of two basic yoga moves that can be performed using a Stretchkins. Not all yoga moves can be performed using a Stretchkins, for example, if you are on your tummy it’s too wobbly to perform the move correctly when laying on a Stretchkins. When we do these moves I use the Stretchkins to demonstrate the move by putting it in the yoga position.

Because the Stretchkins is so poseable this works perfectly and the children love it.

Easy Pose

1. Sit on the edge of a firm blanket.

2. With your knees wide, place each foot beneath the opposite knee.

3. Place your hands on your knees, palms down.

4. Balance your weight evenly across your sit bones.

5. Gaze straight ahead with soft eyes.

Downward-Facing Dog.

1. Come onto the floor on your hands and knees.

2. Exhale and lift your knees away from the floor.

3. Then with an exhalation, push your top thighs back and stretch your heels onto or down toward the floor.

4. Hold for a few minutes whilst breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.
